Overall meaning : Allah, Exalted be He, commands the faithful to compete with one another and hasten to earn His forgiveness and to be admitted into Paradise, whose width is as great as that of the heavens and the earth, prepared for the God-fearing, who give to charity, alike in prosperity and in adversity, do not give vent to their anger when they are enraged and pardon people when they offend them. These are traits of benevolence, and Allah loves those who possess them.
Other good qualities of the God-fearing are mentioned here: If they commit a major sin or a minor one, they instantly remember Allah and implore Him to pardon their sins—for no one can forgive sins except Allah—and they do not persist in such misdeeds while they know they have sinned against Him and are thus subject to His punishment if they persist in committing them. They also know that repentance is a duty towards Allah and that He accepts the repentance of His servants. These will be rewarded with forgiveness from their Lord and will be admitted into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them forever. Excellent indeed will be the reward of those who do good works.
