Overall meaning : The Almighty states that at the time before the Torah was revealed to Moses, all kinds of good food were lawful to the descendants of Jacob, peace be upon him, except for one type which Jacob forbade for himself, namely camel meat and milk, and his children followed suit. It was not Allah who had forbidden it. Then after the revelation of the Torah, Allah permitted and prohibited them whatever He pleased in accordance with His absolute wisdom. This abrogated His previous command to them permitting them all types of food with the exception of camel meat and milk. Allah then instructs His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to ask the Jews to bring the Torah and read it to see for themselves if it truly mentions that Allah forbids what Jacob had forbidden for himself. Having proved their claim false and established evidence against them, He emphatically states that those who invent falsehoods about Allah after the truth has become abundantly clear are the real transgressors.
