Overall meaning : When Jesus, peace be upon him, became aware of the Children of Israel’s outright rejection of his message and denial of his prophethood, Allah Almighty states, he sought his companions’ support, saying, ‘Who will help me convey Allah’s message and uphold His religion?’ The disciples declared their full support form Allah’s religion. They proclaimed their faith, called Jesus, peace be upon him, to witness their total surrender to Allah’s will and earnestly prayed, ‘Lord, we have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed Your Messenger, Jesus; count us, therefore, among those who declare Your oneness, believe Your messengers, do what You command and avoid what You forbid.’
Next, Allah Almighty describes the evil scheme the Israelites who disbelieved Jesus, peace be upon him, devised to kill him and how Almighty Allah countered their schemes by schemes of His own, bringing their schemes to nothing. In fact, He made someone look like him and the lookalike was mistakenly crucified in his place, thus frustrating their plans, for He is the best of planners. Allah then mentions how He assured Jesus, peace be upon him, that He would cause him to sleep before raising him, in both soul and body, to Himself, that He would take him out of their midst safe and sound, that He would exalt his those who truly follow him by providing them with clear proofs and continue to give them honour and victory over the unbelievers until the Day of Resurrection, and that to Him will all return for the final judgement. Those who deny the truth will be severely punished in this world—through killing, taken captive and humiliation—and in the world to come—by being subjected to severe torment in Hellfire. They will have none to help them or protect them against the terrible punishment.
As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, He will give them their reward in full, not in the least diminished, both in this world—through victory and dominance—and in the hereafter—by being admitted into Paradise and winning Allah’s good pleasure. Allah does not love the wrongdoers, so how can He do any of His creation any wrong?!
Allah then informs His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that He recites to him such revelations and the stories He has related to him about Jesus and his mother, peace be upon them, through Gabriel, peace be upon him, stating that they provide signs proving his sincerity and the truthfulness of his mission as a prophet, and the authenticity of the Qur’an, that is full of wisdom.
