Overall meaning : Believers, bow down and prostrate yourselves in your prayers, worship your Lord alone and do good so that you may succeed. Strive hard in Allah’s cause to the best of your ability: strive hard—for the sake of Allah alone—against your whims and desires, against yourselves by observing what He commands and avoiding what He forbids, against Satan, against Allah’s enemies who fight you and against all those who promote oppression, tyranny, error and deviation from the truth. He has chosen you to convey and support His religion and has been gracious to you by making your religion easy and laying no hardship whatsoever in it—the religion of your father Abraham.
Allah named you Muslims in the previous revealed books and in this Qur’an, and has chosen you for such grace so that the Last Messenger, Muhammad, may be a witness against you that he has conveyed his Lord’s message to you and that you may be witnesses against the past nations that their messengers conveyed their Lord’s message to them. Therefore, give thanks for such a favour by duly performing the prescribed prayers, paying the obligatory charity (zakat), adhering firmly to Allah and relying on Him in all your affairs—and Excellent Protector and an Excellent Helper He is!
