Overall meaning : Almighty Allah says: Whatever blessings and pleasures Allah has given you, people, is but a fleeting and passing enjoyment and ornament of the life of this world, but what Allah has in store for the righteous in Paradise is far better—an everlasting reward. Will you not, then, use your intellect?!
Can someone to whom We have made a gracious promise—Paradise—which he will certainly see fulfilled and who will obtain Our reward in the hereafter, be compared to someone who rejects Us and denies meeting with Us and prefers the present life and its transitory pleasures, but who, on Resurrection Day, will be one of those brought before Us for judgement?!
Mention to the people, Muhammad, the Day of Resurrection when Allah will call those who ascribe partners to Him, saying, ‘Where are those gods that you alleged to be My partners in the life of the world and you worshipped besides Me?’ The leaders of unbelief who are justly deserving of Allah’s punishment and wrath will say, ‘Lord, these are the people whom we called to falsehood and they obeyed us; we led them astray as we ourselves were led astray. We disown them before You; it was not us that they worshipped in the worldly life; rather, they followed their own whims and desires!’
Those who associate partners with Allah will then be told, ‘Call now those you used to worship besides Allah and claimed to be His partners, so that they may benefit you today.’ They will call on them, but they will not respond to them. All of them—both the leaders and their followers—will see the punishment prepared for them. Had these idolaters been guided to the truth in the worldly life, they would not have followed partners besides Allah.
And mention to them, Muhammad, the Day of Resurrection when Allah will call those who worship false deities besides Him, saying: ‘What answer did you give the messengers I sent you? Did you believe them and followed them, or did you just deny them? All excuses and arguments will be obscure for them on that day, and they will not be guided to a correct answer; they will not be able to ask anyone for an answer to the questions Allah will ask them, and they remain silent. But as for those who repent, believe in Allah and His messengers and do righteous deeds, they will be among the successful in the hereafter.
