Overall meaning : The Almighty tells us here how the human story all began and what exactly happened: Your Lord said to the angels, as well as to Satan, ‘I am going to create a human being out of clay. After I have formed him and breathed the spirit of life into him, prostrate yourselves before him, as a token of respect and honour.’ All the angels obeyed Allah’s command and prostrated themselves before Adam. Iblees, however, refused to do so out of sheer arrogance, and thus became an unbeliever.
‘Satan,’ Allah said to him, ‘What prevents you from prostrating yourself before Adam whom I have created with My own hands? Are you too proud to prostrate to him, driven by your own arrogance, or do you think yourself so superior that you cannot be ordered to prostrate before anyone you deem inferior to you?!’ Satan said, ‘I am better than Adam. You created me from fire, but You created him from clay!’ ‘Get out of Paradise, then,’ Allah said, ‘for you are henceforth disgraced and accursed, and you are expelled from My grace and mercy until the Day of Resurrection.’
‘Lord,’ Iblees said, ‘delay my death and do not punish me until the day when all will be resurrected.’ Allah said to him, ‘You are among those who will be delayed until the appointed day—the time of the first blowing of the Trumpet.’ ‘I swear by Your might,’ said Satan, ‘that I will mislead all Adam’s descendants, except those of Your servants whom You have chosen and purified to obey You and whom You have protected against my guile.’ Allah said, ‘This, then, is the truth, and I speak nothing but the truth: I will surely fill Hell with you and with those who follow you amongst Adam’s descendants, all together.’
