Overall meaning : The rich reward We have mentioned will be for the righteous who observe what We command and avoid what We forbid. As for those who transgress Our limits by reason of their unbelief and disobedience, they will have the worst place of destination in the hereafter: Hell into which they will be cast to burn and suffer its heat. What an evil resting-place! This is the torment which We have prepared for them: Extremely hot water and pus flowing from their bodies. Let them, then, taste it. They will also suffer other punishments of various sorts.
They will be told, ‘This is a large group of your followers and fellow sinners being hurled into Hell with you.’ The leaders of unbelief already there will say, ‘There is no welcome for them. They will burn in the Fire just like us and will not be able to keep its heat away from us in any way!’ The followers being thrown into Hell will reply, ‘No, it is you who will have no welcome. You have brought this upon us. It was you who called us to disbelieve in Allah in the worldly life and we followed you, and you have thus caused us to enter the Fire along with you, so evil is Hell as a resting place for us and you!’
The followers will then pray, ‘Lord, inflict on those who have brought this fate upon us and caused us to be here a double punishment in the Fire.’ The arrogant leaders will ask each other, ‘How is it that we do we not see with us here the poor and weak men among the believers whom we used to count in the life of the world among the lowly and wretched? Were we wrong in despising and mocking them in the worldly life, and so they have not entered the Fire with us? Or is it that they are here with us but our eyes have failed to see them?!’
Such in truth will be the wrangling among the dwellers of the Fire.
