Overall meaning : The Quraysh unbelievers are surprised that a prophet from among themselves has come to warn them of Allah’s punishment if they persist in their unbelief. ‘This is a sorcerer and a liar!’ they say. ‘Is he calling us to worship One God and forsake the worship of our gods? This is a very strange thing indeed!’
Their leaders go about saying, ‘Adhere to your religion and stand firm in the worship of your gods. Muhammad is only calling you to this message of his so that he may have power over all of us. We have not heard anything like this in the previous Christian faith. It is nothing but a false invention. What he is saying is only a lie he himself has invented! How can the Qur’an be revealed to him alone out of all of us?!’
In fact, they doubt that this Qur’an is My own revelation. Indeed, they have not tasted My torment yet! Do they possess the treasures of the mercy of your Lord, the Almighty, the Ever-Giving? Or does the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything between them belong to them? Let them, then, ascend the heavens by all conceivable means so that they may control and administer the treasures We possess and do whatever they wish! Do not heed what they say, Muhammad, for they are nothing but a party that is bound to suffer defeat soon.
