Overall meaning : The Almighty says: When some affliction, such as a disease or poverty, strikes people, they sincerely call upon their Lord, turning to in repentance and asking none but Him; but then, no sooner does He give them a taste of His mercy, such as good health and abundant sustenance, some among them associate other partners besides Him to show themselves ungrateful for the favours which We have bestowed on them. Enjoy, you who associate partners besides Allah, the fleeting pleasures of this life. You will soon know the punishment you will suffer on the Day of Judgement. Have We ever sent down to those who ascribe partners to Us some sanction enjoining them to worship others besides Us so that they may continue to do so?!
When We give people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it; but when they are caught in a distressful situation because of their sins, they despair of Allah’s mercy and of ever obtaining relief from Him. Do they not see that Allah gives abundantly to whomever He pleases, and sparingly to whomever He pleases? Surely there are signs in this for the believers, by which they perceive Allah’s mercy and wisdom.
