Overall meaning : Allah, Exalted be He, makes mention of part of the conditions of people with diseased hearts: He says: There are some people who insincerely say, ‘We believe in Allah,’ yet if they happen to suffer harm at the hands of the unbelievers in an attempt to turn them away from their religion, they take people’s persecution for Allah’s punishment and thus renounce their faith to protect themselves against their persecutors. But if victory and booty come from your Lord, Muhammad, these apostates are sure to say to the believers, ‘We have always been with you,’ only to have a share in the booty! Does Allah not know best what is in every person’s heart?! Allah will surely reveal in practice, what is already known to Him, the reality of the true believers and that of the hypocrites and thus repay them all according to their intentions and deeds.
