Overall meaning : Almighty Allah says to His Prophet: Your companions ask you about the ruling on inheritance from someone who dies childless and without living parents. Say to them, Muhammad, that Allah Himself gives them the ruling concerning this matter: If a man dies childless and without any living parents but has a full sister or a half-sister on the father’s side, she inherits half of his estate. If, however, the sister dies childless before her brother and has no living parents, he inherits all her estate. If there are other heirs who have prescribed, apportioned shares, such as her husband, they take their prescribed shares and he takes the rest of the estate.
He mentions two more cases regarding a person who dies childless and without living parents: If he has two or more full sisters or two or more half-sisters on the father’s side, they inherit two-thirds of his estate; but if he has both full brothers and full sisters or half-brothers and half-sisters on the father’s side, the male is entitled to twice the share of the female. Allah Almighty concludes by saying that He makes His laws clear to His servants so they may not err or go astray, pointing out that He has knowledge of all things.
