Overall meaning : Allah Almighty forbids His servants from entering mosques and from performing the prayers while they are in a state of drunkenness until they become completely sober and can understand what they are saying (This was before alcohol became eventually forbidden). He also forbids them from entering mosques and from performing the prayers in a state of ritual impurity—unless they are passing through them from one door to another but without staying—until they take a ritual bath. If they are sick and cannot use water or when water is not readily available while on a journey or after breaking their ablution as a result of answering the call of nature or after having intimate relations with their wives, they may resort to pure earth as a substitute for water by striking both hands lightly on pure earth and then wiping their faces and their hands with them. Allah is All-Pardoning, All-Forgiving.
