Overall meaning : Allah Almighty addresses people, reminding them of some of the countless blessings He has bestowed on them, saying that He alone has made the night for them in order for them to find peace and rest in it from fatigue, and has made the day full of light so they may earn their livelihoods and cater for their needs. Surely, He declares, in this there are signs for those who listen to Allah’s revealed verses and reflect on them.
Then He explains that the Arab idolaters claim that He has begotten children! Glory be to Him! Self-sufficient is He, and far exalted is He above having any need for a wife and children, or any of His creation, for that matter! To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, so how can He have any children from what He has created and everything belongs to Him? These idolaters have no evidence whatsoever for such an assertion. Would they say something about Allah which they do not even know if it is true?
Then, addressing His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, He instructs him to say: Those who invent falsehood about Allah will not succeed in this life or in the hereafter. They will have only a brief enjoyment in this life, but then they will be returned to Us and We will make them taste the terrible punishment for their unbelief.
