Overall meaning : Allah, Exalted be He, says: This is a declaration from Allah and His Messenger to all people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm An-Nahr, or the Day of Sacrifice, refers to the 10th day of the lunar month of Dhul-Hijjah.) that Allah is free from all treaty obligations to the idolaters who associate partners with Allah, and so is His Messenger. Therefore, if you repent, O idolaters, it will be for your own good; but if you turn away, know then that you will by no means frustrate Allah’s plan and escape His punishment. Give, O Muhammad, the unbelievers the news of a painful punishment.
Of these, Allah excludes those unbelievers who have made a treaty with the Muslims and who have honoured the treaty in every detail without failing to fulfil their obligations required by the treaty towards Muslims. He then commands the believers to keep to the agreement into which they have entered with them until the end of the term agreed with them, stating that He loves the righteous who honour their agreements and never violate them.
