Overall meaning : Can you, then, Muhammad, make the unbelievers hear in such a way as to benefit from what you say to them, or guide those who are blind to the path of truth from which they have clearly strayed far away?! That is all up to Us. Your duty is only to convey the message, and it is for Us to judge them and repay them according to their deeds.
Even if We take you away, Muhammad, from these idolaters’ midst —by death or otherwise—without your witnessing their punishment, We will surely inflict retribution on them; and if We show you the punishment with which We have threatened them executed, We have absolute power over them. Therefore, hold fast to the Qur’an which We have revealed to you; you are truly on a straight path.
Surely this Qur’an is an honour for you, Muhammad, and for your people, as well as a reminder to you and to them, and Allah will question you all about your observance of its teachings. Ask the true believers among the People of the Book to whom We sent messengers before you if We ever appointed gods to be worshipped besides the All-Compassionate God!
