Overall meaning : Allah, Exalted be He, says: Have you not seen that Allah has created the heavens and the earth for a good reason and not in vain—namely so that people worship Him alone—and that He is capable of bringing them back to life on Resurrection Day? If He so wills, He can destroy you, people, if you disobey Him and bring forth people other than you who are obedient to Him; and that is not difficult for Allah at all.
The Almighty then mentions part of the argument that will take place on the Day of Resurrection between the followers and those they followed: All mankind will rise up from their graves on Judgement Day and appear before Allah, the One who holds absolute sway over all that exists. They will be assembled on a plain earth, and none of them will be hidden from Him. The followers will say to their leaders who were too arrogant to follow the truth in the worldly life, ‘We were your followers in the life of the world; we obeyed you, but you led us astray. Can you, then, protect us from Allah’s punishment in any way at all?’ The leaders will reply, ‘Had Allah guided us to faith, we would have guided you to it. Now it is all the same for us whether we grieve impatiently or suffer patiently; there is no way for us to escape punishment.’
