Overall meaning : The Almighty mentions that the honourable messengers, notwithstanding their high rank, do not all enjoy the same degree of honour. In fact, Allah Almighty has exalted some above others. To some He spoke directly; others He raised to a lofty status, such as Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who occupies the best and the highest position. To Jesus, peace be upon him, He gave conclusive proofs and clear miracles, as well as the Gospel which He revealed to him, all proving the truthfulness of his message, and strengthened and supported him with Angel Gabriel, peace be upon him.
Had Allah pleased, those who came after each of these messengers, peace be upon them, would not have contended among themselves and fought one another after Allah’s manifest signs and proofs had come to them to show them the truth and the way leading to it. They only fell into dispute and fought one another because they disagreed regarding the signs that had come to them. Some of them acknowledged the truth and believed, while some others rejected the truth and disbelieved. If your Lord had so willed, He would have prevented them from contending among themselves and from fighting one another, but the command of Allah is a decree determined, and He does whatever He wills.
