Overall meaning : Almighty Allah says: Remember, Muhammad, when you said to Zayd ibn Haarithah, on whom Allah had bestowed His grace by having guided him to Islam, and on whom you have also conferred favours by freeing him from slavery and adopted, ‘Do not divorce your wife, be patient with her and fear Allah regarding the way you treat her.’ You sought to hide in your heart what Allah had already informed you about and would yet bring to light, namely that Zaynab will be one of your wives after Zayd divorces her. You feared that people would say that you married Zayd’s wife, when you had already forbidden men from marrying their adopted sons’ wives, whereas it is Allah whom you should fear!
Then, when Zayd divorced his wife zaynab, We gave her to you in marriage, so that the believers would not consider it sinful to marry the wives of their adopted sons when the latter have divorced them. Allah’s commands must be carried out.
No blame whatsoever attaches to the Prophet with respect to what Allah has ordained and made lawful for him. Such was Allah’s way with the prophets before him. Allah’s command is a preordained decree that is bound to be fulfilled.
That is Allah’s way with those prophets who convey His messages to their people, fearing Him none but Him; Allah is sufficient to keep count of His slaves’ actions and to repay them according to their deeds.
Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but the Messenger of Allah and the Last Prophet. Surely Allah has knowledge of all things.
