Overall meaning : Allah states, directing His speech to the People of the Book (the Jews and Christians), that He has sent to them His Messenger, Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, whose description they clearly find written in their books, showing many things which they have hidden from people, making clear to them what they have distorted and altered in the scriptures, passing over many things that they have changed and concealed in their books since they would not bring about any benefit if explained. Then He informs them that a great book—the Noble Qur’an—has come to them from Him, which is a light that dissipates the darkness of ignorance and error and makes clear to people everything they need to learn about in their religion and worldly matters. With it, He guides those who strive after His good pleasure by acting in the way He approves to the ways of peace, salvation and safety in this life and in the hereafter, until they reach Paradise, the Abode of Peace. He also takes them out of the darkness of unbelief and sin into the light of faith and obedience by His will and assistance, and guides them to the right path, which is His true religion.
