Overall meaning : Whatever is in the heavens and the earth extols Allah’s limitless glory and declares Him free from all defects and imperfections. He is the All-Mighty; who holds absolute sway over all that exists; the All-Wise, who places everything in its perfect place.
It is He alone who drove the Jews of Banu An-Nadheer out of their homes at the first gathering and expulsion of the Jews from Madeenah. You, Prophet’s Companions, never imagined they would ever leave their homes due to their strength, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them against Allah’s might. Nonetheless, the punishment of Allah came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts. Thus, they destroyed their homes with their own hands from the inside (so that the Muslims would make the less advantage of what they had to leave behind them), and they themselves left the believers with no choice but to take part in destroying their homes from the outside. Learn from their example, you who are endowed with insight and good sense.
Had Allah not decreed banishment for the Jews of Banu An-Nadheer, He would have punished them in some way or another in this world in addition to the torment of the Fire they will suffer in the world to come. That is because they have opposed and defied Allah and His Messenger. Those who defy and set themselves against Allah will be severely punished by Allah for so doing. Allah is severe in retribution.
