Overall meaning : Allah Almighty swears and emphatically declares that if He defers these idolaters’ punishment to an appointed time and they find it too slow to come, they deny it, mockingly saying, 'What is preventing this torment from coming now if it is real?’ Surely the day such punishment falls upon them, there will be no one to divert it from them; and they will be surrounded by such punishment, which they have previously mocked and disbelieved, from all sides. If We let man taste some of Our grace and bestow on him a blessing, such as good health and security, and then take it away from him, he abandons all hope in Allah’s mercy and becomes ungrateful to Allah, forgetting all the favours He has bestowed upon him. And if, after adversity, We let him taste prosperity, ease and plenty, he will surely say, 'Gone are my sorrows and hardships,’ and grows exultant and boastful, behaving arrogantly towards people. Not so are those who are patient in adversity and do righteous deeds in prosperity to give thanks to Allah for His favours. These will certainly have their sins forgiven, and they surely will receive a mighty reward in the hereafter.
