Overall meaning : Now, when man is tried with wealth, honour and a life of ease by his Lord, he says, totally ignorant of the fact that Allah is testing him, ‘My Lord has honoured me with this!’ But when Allah tries him with poverty, restricting his means of livelihood, he discontentedly says, totally ignorant of the fact that Allah is testing him, ‘My Lord has humiliated me with this!’
The truth is not as man thinks, namely that he is honoured by Allah when Allah bestows wealth on him and is disgraced by Him when He restricts his means of sustenance. By no means is the truth as you, people, think! The truth is that you do not honour or show kindness to the orphans, nor do you urge one another to feed the poor. You greedily devour the inheritance of others, unjustly taking the shares of women and children, and you have an insatiable love of wealth.
