Overall meaning : The unbelievers used to laugh at the believers in the life of the world; and whenever they passed by them, they would mock them by winking at one another in derision. When these wicked unbelievers returned to their families, they would return exultantly, rejoicing at having derided the believers; and whenever they saw the believers, they would say, ‘These people have surely gone astray.’ Yet We have not appointed the unbelievers to watch over the believers and keep count of their deeds, for them to say so!
On the Day of Judgement, the believers, in their turn, will laugh at the unbelievers when they see them tormented. The believers will be comfortably seated on luxurious couches in Paradise, looking at the endless bliss prepared for them and at the unbelievers being punished. Will the unbelievers not have, then, been repaid for what they used to do to the believers in the worldly life?!
