Overall meaning : Know that the life of this world is but a play and passing delight, a beautiful show, a cause of boating among you and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. It is like plants that flourish after the rain. Their growth at first pleases the unbelievers, but then these plants wither away, and you see them all turn yellow, soon becoming worthless stubble!
In the life to come there will be severe punishment for the unbelievers who have been deceived by this world and have turned away from the hereafter, as well as forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure for His faithful servants. The life of this world is but a fleeting pleasure and falsehood that deceives those who trust it.
Compete with one another for forgiveness from your Lord and for Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His messengers. Such is the bounty of Allah which He bestows on whomever He pleases. Allah is the Lord of infinite bounty.
