Preamble: The Mannerisms of Travel

Some of the mannerisms of travel that a Muslim must strive for are:
· Hastening to repent from all sins and acts of disobedience and making amends with anyone he has wronged.
· Writing a will regarding what is due to him and what he owes in terms of debts, having it witnessed, paying off whatever he can in terms of debts, returning items entrusted to him, and assigning someone to pay off whatever debts he was unable to pay off.
· Leaving behind financial support for his family and those he is obliged to support until his time of return.
· That his financial support be good and permissible, far from doubtful matters.
· That he learn what is legislated for his Hajj and `umrah, study the fiqh of these matters, ask about what he finds problematic, and take with him a book that is clear regarding the rulings related to the rites and comprehensive regarding their objectives.
· Seeking the companionship of virtuous people from amongst the people of obedience during his travel and avoiding isolation.
· It is mustahabb that he bid farewell to his family, neighbours, friends, and those beloved to him; and that they bid him farewell with what has been related in the Sunnah.
· Making much mention of Allah, reciting the Qur’an, and supplication, including: the supplication of riding and travelling, saying subhanallah when descending, saying Allahu Akbar when ascending, seeking protection through the consummate words of Allah from the evil He has created when settling in a place, and supplicating during pre-dawn hours.
· Leaving on Thursday if that is easy, in order to emulate what the Prophet ﷺ did.
· He should employ gentleness and good character; avoid controversy and competing with people in crowded areas; guard his tongue from insults and all vile expressions; and protect it from lying, backbiting, slander, mockery, too much hearsay, pursuing that which does not concern him, and excessive joking.
· It is prohibited for a woman to travel for Hajj or `umrah without a mahram.
· It is mustahabb for a traveller to go out of his way to be good to his companions. He must refrain from harming them, order them with what is good, and prohibit them from doing evil with wisdom and kind admonition inasmuch as possible.
· Observing the five prescribed prayers in congregation.
· Hastening to return to his family if they are not with him.
· It is from the Sunnah that he not return to his family at night unless he informs of them of such.
· It is from the Sunnah when returning from travel to go to a mosque close to his house and offer two units of prayer in it.
