3. The virtues of the Holy Qur’an

3.1. It is a guide for the righteous who are conscious of Allah
Allah, may He be exalted, says, "This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah." (al-Baqarah 2:2) Ibn Kathir said, ‘Guidance is only for the righteous who are conscious of Allah, as He says, "Say, “It is, for those who believe, a guidance healing; and for those who do not believe, there is deafness in their ears and they are blind to what it contains of beauty and signs. It is as if they are being called from a far off place." (Fussilat 41:44)
"And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss." (al-Isra’ 17:82) And there are other verses which indicate that only the believers benefit from the Qur’an, because it is guidance in and of itself, but no one can attain that except the righteous, as Allah says, "O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the hearts and guidance and mercy for the believers." (Yunus 10:57) [87] See: Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/163.

3.2 Its having been sent down in the month of Ramadan became one of the most prominent characteristics of this month
If the month of Ramadan attained this virtue because the Qur’an was sent down in it, then how about the honour and virtue of the Qur’an itself, which was sent down? Allah, may He be exalted, says, "The month of Ramadhan is that in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion." (al-Baqarah 2:185) Al-Shinqiti said, ‘The sending down of the Holy Qur’an is the greatest blessing that has been bestowed upon humanity. For that reason, Allah taught them to praise Him for this immense blessing at the beginning of Surat al-Kahf, where He says, "All praise is due to Allah, who has sent down to His Servant the Book." (al-Kahf 18:1) Allah, may He be exalted, explained that He sent down this great blessing during the month of Ramadan,  and the sending down of this blessing during the month of Ramadan caused it to become the month of fasting. ‘ [88] See: Adwa’ al-Bayan, 7/375.

3.3. One may attain mercy by listening to it
Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says, "So when the Qur'an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention, that you may receive mercy." (al-A‘raf 7:204) Ibn Jarir said, "That you may receive mercy means: so that your Lord may bestow His mercy upon you because of your paying heed to its exhortations and reflecting on its meanings, and your putting into practice what your Lord has explained to you of His commands in its verses." [89] See: Tafsir Ibn Jarir, 10/658.

3.4. Allah, may He be exalted, swore by the Qur’an
Allah, may He be exalted, says, "Ya, Seen. By the wise Qur’an, Indeed you, O Muhammad, are from among the messengers." (Ya-Sin 36:1-3) Ibn al-Qayyim said, ‘When Allah, may He be glorified, swears by any category of thing, He only swears by the most sublime type thereof… So when He swore by His words, He swore by the noblest and most sublime of them, namely the Qur’an.’ [90] See: al-Tibyan fi Ayman al-Qur’an, 1/188.

3.5. Adhering to the Qur’an will protect one from confusion and misguidance

Allah, may He be exalted, says, "And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided." (Al ‘Imran 3:103) One of the views regarding what is meant by the rope of Allah is that it is the Qur’an. [91] See: Tafsir Ibn Jarir, 5/644; Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 2/89.

It was narrated from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said in his sermon (khutbah) during the Farewell Pilgrimage, “I have left you something which, if you adhere to it, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah.” [92] Narrated by Muslim, 1218, in a lengthy hadith.

Al-Shatibi said of the Holy Qur’an: ‘It is well established that the Book is the basis of law (sharia), the foundation of the Islamic religion, the source of wisdom, proof of the message and light to illuminate people’s vision and insight. There is no path to Allah except the path of the Qur’an; there is no salvation without it and one should not accept anything that contradicts it.’ [93] See: al-Muwafaqat, 4/144.

3.6. The one who learns and teaches the Qur’an is described as the best of people

It was narrated from ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” [94] Narrated by al-Bukhari, 5027.

Al-Mazhari said, ‘The words “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it” mean: as the best of words are the words of Allah, by the same token the best of people after the Prophets are those who learn and teach the words of Allah.’ [95] See: al-Mafatih fi Sharh al-Masabih, 3/63.

Ibn Taymiyah said, ‘The meaning of the words “The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it” includes teaching people how to read it and teaching them its meanings too. In fact, teaching its meanings is the main purpose of teaching people how to read it, for that is what increases faith.’ [96] See: Majmu‘ al-Fatawa, 13/403.

3.7. The Qur’an will intercede for its people on the Day of Resurrection

It was narrated that Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “Read the Qur’an, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection interceding for its companions. Read the two bright ones, al-Baqarah and Soorat Aal ‘Imraan, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection like two clouds or canopies, or like two dense flocks of birds, pleading on behalf of their companions.” [97] Narrated by Muslim, 804, in a lengthy hadith.

‘Ali al-Qari said, ‘The words “Read the Qur’an” mean: Make the most of reading it and persist in doing so. “for it will come on the Day of Resurrection interceding” and its intercession will be accepted, “for its companions” that is, those who put its teachings into practice. “Read” in particular “the two bright ones” that is, the two shining ones; they are described as bright and shining because of their light, guidance and great reward. It is as if Allah is comparing their status in relation to other surahs to that of the sun and moon in relation to other heavenly bodies.’ [98] See: Mirqat al-Masabih, 4/1460.

3.8.  The promise of reward for reading it and studying it
It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it together, but tranquillity will descend upon them, mercy will overshadow them, the angels will surround them and Allah will mention them to those who are with Him.” [99] Narrated in a lengthy hadith by Muslim, 2699.

Tranquillity (sakinah) is something that Allah, may He be exalted, instils in the heart, making it clear and pure and taking away darkness, gloom and constraint from it. Hence the individual becomes reassured, with no worries or doubts, and content with the will and decree of Allah. Those who meet in such gatherings are overshadowed and encompassed by mercy from Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, which is like a vast cover over them. The angels surround them, going around them and encircling them by way of showing respect to them and listening to their remembrance of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, or so that they may be witnesses for them before Allah, may He be exalted. And Allah mentions them to those who are with Him and boasts of them to the angels who are close to Him. [100] See: Zad al-Ma‘ad, p. 624.
