4. The accountability of the jinn, the sending of the Messengers to them, and their requital in the hereafter

4.1. The accountability of the jinn
4.1.1. Evidence from the Qur’an that the jinn are accountable

i. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning), "And I did not create the jinn and humans except to worship Me." (al-Dhariyat 51:56)

ii. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning), "O jinn and humans, did there not come to you Messengers from among you, reciting My revelations to you and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours?" (al-An‘am 6:130)

4.1.2. Evidence from the Sunnah
i. It was narrated from Ibn Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “Someone from the jinn came to call me, and I went with him and recited the Qur’an to them.” [271] Narrated by Muslim, 450.

Ibn Hubayrah said, “This hadith indicates that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was sent to the jinn and to humankind.” [272] See: al-Ifsah ‘an Ma‘ani al-Sihah, 2/106.

ii. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “I have been sent to all of creation; and the (line of) Prophets ends with me.” [273] Narrated by Muslim, 523. A similar, shorter report was narrated by al-Bukhari, 2977, from Abu Hurayrah (MR), according to which the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said, “I have been sent with concise speech and I have been supported with fear. Whilst I was sleeping, I was given the keys to the treasures of the earth and they were placed in my hand.”

Al-Subki said, “The words ‘I have been sent to all of creation’ include both the jinn and humankind.” [274] See: Fatawa al-Subki, 5/67.

4.2. Of what race were the Messengers who were sent to the jinn?

The Messengers who were sent to the jinn are the same human Messengers who were sent to humankind, and they were not from among the jinn. Al-Shubli said, “The majority of earlier and later scholars are of the view that not a single Messenger was from among the jinn; the messengers were only from among humankind.” [275] See: Akam al-Marjan fi Ahkam al-Jann, p. 63.

Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, said, "We did not send before you any but men to whom We gave revelation, from among the people of the cities." (Yusuf 12:109) Ibn al-Qayyim said, “This indicates that no jinni, no woman, and no Bedouin (desert-dweller) was sent as a Messenger.” [276] See: Tariq al-Hijratayn wa Bab al-Sa‘adatayn, p. 416.

With regard to the verse in which Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says, "O jinn and humans, did there not come to you Messengers from among you, reciting My revelations to you and warning you of the meeting of this day of yours?" (al-An‘am 6:130) al-Qurtubi said, “Because the jinn are among those who may be addressed and could understand, Allah said from among you, even though the messengers were from among humankind and the message is addressed mostly to humans but also includes the jinn, just as it is addressed mostly to males but also includes females. … What is meant by from among you is from among the two races. This is possible, because they are both mentioned at the beginning of the verse.” [277] See: Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 7/86.

4.3. The requital of the jinn in the hereafter
4.3.1. Requital of the disbelievers among them in the hereafter

Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning), "We assigned to them evil close companions who made fair-seeming to them their conduct in this world and their denial of the hereafter, and the punishment became inevitable for them, as had happened to nations of jinn and men who came before them, for indeed they are all losers." (Fussilat 41:25) Ibn al-Qayyim said, “The Muslims are unanimously agreed that the disbelievers among the jinn will be in the Fire.” [278] See: Tariq al-Hijratayn wa Bab al-Sa‘adatayn, p. 417.

Ibn Jibrin said, “The fact that they are created from fire does not mean that they will not be punished with fire, because the fire of the hereafter is seventy times hotter than the fire of this world. It may be that there will be a special fire for them with which they will be punished, because the hereafter is different from this world.” [279] See: the official website of Shaykh Ibn Jibrin.

4.3.2. The reward of the believers among them in the hereafter

Al-Razi said, “The correct view is that they come under the same ruling as the sons of Adam, so they will deserve reward for obedience and punishment for disobedience.” [280] See: Tafsir al-Razi, 28/29.

Muhammad Rashid Rida said, “The view of those who say that the Muslims among the jinn will not enter paradise because there is no reward for them is an odd view.” [281] See: Tafsir al-Manar, 8/97.

Ibn Baz said, “The jinn and humankind are the same: whoever among them believes and dies as a believer will enter Paradise, and whoever among them dies as a disbeliever will enter Hell. It is exactly the same, for both jinn and humans.” [282] See: Fatawa Nur ‘ala al-Darb, 1/219.
